Life Lessons: Week 1 of the College Year

It’s my first full week back at school and already, so much has been going on. I’m beyond busy, up to my earlobes in work and responsibilities, and yet, I’m going to sit down and write a bit tonight. I mean, c’mon people. Priorities, priorities, priorities. I probably should be finishing my Linguistics homework right about now, but I need a good stress-reliever, so HELLO BLOG! 🙂 I want to be a few parts serious, funny, and slightly inspirational tonight, so we’ll just see how this goes. I’m hearing all this for the first time too, so forgive me ahead of time if my thoughts resemble mush. These are just a few of the things that I’ve learned over this past week.

Here we go. Life Lessons: Week 1.

  1. Your life will feel much more put together as soon as your desk is organized.  I had my computer out, my sticky-notes on standby, and my binders assembled before I had my clothes unpacked. Once again. Priorities.
  2. Syllabus Day…er, Week may be more distressing than Finals Week. But get this: it’s not all due tomorrow. It’s okay to have a healthy fear of your workload, but don’t let it overwhelm you too much. I have to relearn this every semester.
  3. Hairspray is a good defense against spiders. Good thing I live with three other girls who care about their hair as much as I do.
  4. Call your Mom. And Dad. And Grandma. Often. I miss my Momma, Daddeo, and Grandma more than I can say. I miss their godly guidance, hugs, and joking…and hearing their voices over the phone just helps.
  5.  It is okay to cry. Never be ashamed of tears and emotions. It’s been a very rough week for me, I’ll be totally honest. I’ve cried in front of two professors and a myriad of friends already and it’s okay. Whether it’s school related, family related, or I’m feeling just plain lonely, I always feel better knowing I can let the tears flow…and knowing that Jesus cries with me.
  6. Never underestimate the power of friendship. I’ve come to appreciate my friends this past month and a half more than ever. I talk often to my friends back home and get daily hugs from my friends here at college. Despite the train wreck my life is in right now, I have some amazing people to help me pick up the pieces.
  7. If you have roommates, don’t brush your teeth all at the same time. Someone will probably get a toothpaste spray-down. (Especially if you laugh as hard as we did).
  8. Be Adventurous. Ride your scooter down the hallway, eat your roommate’s pretzels without her knowledge, or practice your opera debut in the shower. Whatever floats your boat (and whatever adhere’s to one’s moral standards)…just do it. Actually…you should probably be more adventurous than I am. Maybe.
  9. Don’t procrastinate. Just don’t. Blood, sweat, and tears are for the quotes on the backs of cheesy football t-shirts…not to stain your ten page paper that’s due at 8am.
  10. Whatever is going on in your life, God is standing right beside you with His loving hands on your shoulders. One of my professors told me this very thing just a few nights ago. No matter the horrific struggles and pain, our Loving Father cares about us and will guide us through. This is the most important lesson I’ve come to learn, both in college and out. Most of the time, I feel as if part of my heart is missing. I cry. I hurt. I am simply overwhelmed. But as she so lovingly reminded me, our God is great. He is good. He will never leave me and He will never forsake me.

“The Lord your God is with you; He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with His love. He will rejoice over you with singing.” ~Zephaniah 3:17
